Summing up the Talks at the closing press conference, UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Yvo de Boer, said Parties had called for proposals which would enable them to deliver on the four key elements of an agreed outcome in Copenhagen: mitigation, adaptation, technology and finance. But with negotiating time up to 2009 running short, he urged that “proposals need to become more targeted.”

Mr. de Boer spoke of real progress having been made in implementing action on adaptation to climate change. He also expressed the hope that developed countries would announce voluntary contributions to the Kyoto Protocol’s Adaptation Fund at the Climate Change Conference in Poznan in December.

The agreement to scale up practical technology transfer efforts was also welcomed by Mr. de Boer, but he cautioned that “a larger advance in technology cooperation will be crucial for the success of a Copenhagen agreement.”

“The road ahead is daunting,” he said. While acknowledging the commitment of many countries to reach an agreed outcome in Copenhagen, he stressed that “It is crucial that the next meetings produce concrete negotiating texts.”

Placing an added emphasis on corporate social responsibility and ensuring it is at the core of a business’ strategy can yield financial benefits, according to a study from IBM. The survey, “Attaining Sustainable Growth Through Corporate Social Responsibility,” indicates many companies now view CSR as a growth opportunity and not just a regulatory compliance. Sixty-eight percent of those surveyed say they are using CSR activities to help generate revenue. In addition, many companies also view these types of initiatives as a way to gain a competitive advantage and access new business opportunities. Increased awareness by consumers on issues from climate change to product safety is, in part, driving corporate concern for these issues, according to the survey. In turn, the increased visibility of corporate behavior is influencing consumers’ decisions on what to buy and who to buy from, who to work for, who to partner with and where to invest. The survey is based on responses from top executives at more than 250 companies worldwide.

New York City, Here We Come

Original Airdate: February 27, 2008

The girls are taken to their loft in New York City featuring a humanitarian theme. Amy decides to change her name to “Amis”. To Amis, Fatima and Kimberly’s frustration, there is a “no smoking” sign which leads them to smoke outside of the loft. Mr. and Miss J. arrive and round up the girls for a city tour. The final stop is a Badgley Mischka runway show.

After the show, Fatima unintentionally hits Marvita in the face with her hand, brewing tension. The girls are then taken to Elite Model Management building and they meet Paulina Porizkova and Neal Hamil, and Paulina gives each girl brutal and harsh criticism.

At the photo shoot, the girls have to portray homeless women being surrounded by high fashion models. One of the background models is a future Cycle 11 contestant, Isis. Most of the girls receive positive feedback, but Amis’ over-enthusiasm and Kimberly’s dead expressions get criticized. Later, Kimberly admits to Fatima that high fashion is not her interest.

At judging, Paulina Porizkova is revealed to be the new panel judge, replacing Twiggy. When Kimberly is called for evaluation, she states her lack of desire for the fashion industry, and proceeds to quit the competition, despite having a stellar photo. She is the third contestant to voluntarily leave the show, after Cycle 5’s Cassandra Whitehead and Cycle 9’s Ebony Morgan. Months later on the Tyra Banks Show, Kimberly revealed that the true reason she quit the contest was because she suffered a mental breakdown due to her mother and her ex-boyfriend’s death due to committing suicide.

Despite the shock, Tyra announces that there will still be an elimination. While Anya, Whitney, Claire, Aimee, and Lauren shine, the rest of the girls do quite well except Dominique, Allison, Amis and Atalya. Atalya and Amis are revealed to be the bottom two, with Atalya lacking a high fashion appeal and Amis looking lost in her photo. However, the judges see Amis as “edgy”, and she stays in the competition.

He was totally engaging!
I have been to lots of workshops over the years, some good, some not so good and only a couple that I would rate as brilliant, Bruce’s workshop was simply that.

Haven’t laughed that much at Professional Development ever. The most enjoyable conference ever. I left feeling highly motivated, very engaging presentation.

Prior to going I had decided that it was two days that I could ill-afford to be away from school. By morning tea on Day 1 I knew I was about to be proved wrong. What an incredible two days of uplifting learning and laughter that has continued to invade my thoughts everyday since.
