Business Change

Of all organizational types, businesses pose one of the most difficult challenges for managing change. One of the key difficultites that change agents face is the lack of urgency that change-the-business initiatives have as compared with run-the-business priorities.

As we cover in our free tutorial series, businesses today must be able to change the business at the same time they run the business. This is because change is no longer an episodic event. Time was that businesses would experience business as usual until once in a while a great need for change emerged. Then the organization would shift gears for a while to focus on implementing the change. Once it was over, it was back to business as usual - typically for quite some time.

Business life doesn't work that way any more. Change is constant, not episodic. It never goes away. At any one time, organizations should be beginning new change initiatives, continuing to make progress on others, and bringing still others to their conclusions.

People rarely are consciously aware of how the their outdated understanding of change - or the "episodic model" - shapes the way they think about change, but its effects can readily be seen if you look for them. Generally, the tell-tale sign is the way resources are assigned to change efforts. If there is no permanent commitment to the process of change, then the business is using an episodic approach.

For more information about creating leadership and systems that can continually run businesses and change them at the same time, check out our free tutorial on the executive model (#1). (These online video tutorials are quite good; check out the sample video provided here.)
